Review: Mercer Hotel Barcelona

At the beginning of May I went on a short trip to Barcelona where I discovered a fabulous new hotel. Of course I captured my stay in photos and I am happy to share them with you in this article.

The Mercer Hotel is a uniquely beautiful 5-star boutique hotel in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, where the properties´ heritage origins go back nearly 2,000 years to when it was a roman watchtower.

After nine years of renovations by architect Rafael Moneo, the Mercer Barcelona was opened in 2013, and the result of this restoration is a beautifully luxurious blend of old and new. With just 28 rooms in the hotel, there is a very familiar atmosphere, and the young, tremendously attentive staff anticipate every wish from your eyes. It’s no wonder then that I am not alone with my enthusiasm: On Booking.com the Mercer received a rating of 9,4 (!!) and TripAdvisor lists it as the Travellers’ Choice winner of 2014. The prices for one night in a double room start at € 270.

After we arrived at the hotel around noon, we were greeted warmly by the concierge team and they invited us for a glass of cava.

While our luggage was brought to the room, we were given a brief tour of the hotel and I instantly fell in love with the many beautiful design objects.

For the physical well-being of its guests, the hotel includes both a restaurant (run by top chef Jean Luc Figueras) and a small, cozy tapas bistro just next to the lobby.

For our stay we chose a Superior Double room (32 sqm). The room was very spacious and the bed was large and comfortable. From the fabrics to the décor of the room with designer furniture and art, each detail was tastefully done.

Every evening when we returned to our room, there was a small welcome gift from the kitchen, consisting of a selection of homemade chocolates and biscuits. Moreover the mini-bar which is equipped with delicious soft drinks, is free of charge – that´s what I call service!

Bathroom and shower are furnished very modern andd well-lit, and equipped with the wonderful products from Molton Brown.

And if you ask yourself what a suite looks like:

The patio of the Mercer hotel is planted with orange trees and offers a quiet setting, where you can enjoy breakfast or a drink.

Old meets new in the patio of Mercer Hotel:

We spent our first night at the hotel bar where the bartender surprised us with his very own cocktail creations.

A highlight of the hotel is of course the gorgeous roof terrace. A small pool invites you to cool off while enjoying the sun with refreshing drinks at the bar.

Of course I immediately made myself comfortable:

My Conclusion:

I had a wonderful stay at the Mercer Hotel and felt really at home there. This is thanks to both the fantastic staff and the beautiful architecture and decor of the hotel. Another plus point is the location as the Gothic Quarter is home to  many nice bars and good restaurants, but also very close to the beach which can be reached within a few minutes.
